Concert length: 90 minutes, including a 15-min break.
GRAMMY®-winning ensemble Apollo’s Fire has taken Chicago by storm! Known for playing baroque and folk music with SOUL, the lively group plays on historical instruments – bringing new life to old music.
In this program, 6 musicians take us on a journey to the crossroads of baroque and folk music in 1700 – from the pubs of London and Dublin to the cultural heartlands of the American South. Irish and British ballads meet toe-tapping fiddle variations, soulful Black spirituals, and the daring improvisations of early jazz. Words of the great Martin Luther King, Jr. inspire a joyous singalong of “Oh Freedom” to close the program.
Featuring Emi Tanabe and Hanna Bingham on violin, Anna O’Connell on Celtic harp and vocals, Matt Agnew on cello, and director Jeannette Sorrell, keyboard and percussion; joined by vocalist and innovative interpreter of baroque and jazz styles, Jonathan Pierce Rhodes.
“Sorrell and her dazzling period band… are incandescent.”
