FENCING MATCH: Dueling Double Concertos
St. Martin-in-the-Fields

Hailed by Classical Music Magazine as “the USA’s hottest baroque band,” Apollo’s Fire led by Jeannette Sorrell are delighted to collaborate with members of the renowned English Baroque Soloists. The Brits and the Americans join in a lively transatlantic “duel” (no muskets or bayonets this time) as they explore the parallels between 18th-century fencing etiquette and the baroque genre of the double concerto. Highlights include J.S. Bach’s Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins; Vivaldi’s stormy Concerto in A MInor for Two Violins, RV 522; Telemann’s Concerto for Flute & Recorder; and a colorful suite by Rameau. The program climaxes in a transatlantic romp as multiple duels break out in Vivaldi’s La Folia (“Madness”), as arranged by Sorrell.

Featured soloists:
Alan Choo & Emi Tanabe, violin (Apollo’s Fire)
Bojan Čičić & Davina Clarke, violin (English Baroque Soloists)
Daphna Mor, recorder; Kathie Stewart, traverso (Apollo’s Fire)

9:15pm Late-Night Bistro Concert
BAKLAVA BASH: A Middle Eastern Celebration
St. Martin-in-the-Fields – The Crypt (pub)

Join us downstairs for a bistro concert in the medieval Crypt-turned pub at St Martin-in-the-Fields! Israeli recorder virtuoso Daphna Mor and Palestinian-American oud master Ronnie Malley evoke a Middle Eastern café in 1700, along with friends Alan Choo and Emi Tanabe on violin, and American hammered-dulcimer diva, Tina Bergmann.
