The GRAMMY®-winning musicians of Apollo’s Fire invite you back to 1610, when the “wall” between art music and popular music barely existed. In this musical tour of taverns back in the day, we hear how great composers of London, Venice, and Madrid wrote artful variations on popular street tunes. Soulful ballads, lively party tunes, and virtuosic dances by Dowland, Merula and Ortiz leap to life. Apollo’s Fire’s dynamic violinist and concertmaster, Alan Choo, leads this program with three friends.

Harpist-troubadour Anna O’Connell and three friends sing, play, and dance their way from Italy to the British Isles. Starting in medieval Italy, where rustic dance music spilled into the streets of Tuscany and flowed into the palaces, this delightful program features popular street music from medieval times up to the baroque. Toe-tapping dances meet haunting ballads, including Dowland’s famous Flow My Tears. The sounds of fiddle, lute, viola da gamba, and voices will send you out dancing on this winter night.
