Beethoven the Revolutionary

In honor of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year, spend a cozy weekend with this stormy and triumphant composer! Apollo’s Fire is delighted to bring you this video of our “Beethoven the Revolutionary” program.

Beethoven’s epic sense of struggle emerges with fresh intensity as Jeannette Sorrell leads his revolutionary Egmont Overture and Fifth Symphony. Internationally renowned violinist Noah Bendix-Balgley (the young American concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic) made his period-instrument debut in these concerts, bringing lyrical transcendence to Beethoven’s beloved Violin Concerto.
 
These concerts were held in 2017 to mark AF’s 25th Anniversary. An extraordinary orchestra of 50 period-instrument specialists gathered from across North America for this special occasion.

Sorrell called for drama, and the orchestra responded….Sorrell whipped the orchestra into a dramatic frenzy at the beginning of the Fifth Symphony, relieved only by an oboe solo soulfully played by Debra Nagy. Violas and cellos produced a glorious sound…with transparent precision. The Scherzo… led on to a lightning-fast trio which nearly but not quite spun out of control. An impressive performance.
 
Playing with exquisite lyricism and attention to detail, violinist Noah Bendix-Balgley [in the Beethoven Violin Concerto] engaged in an eloquent, contemplative dialogue with Sorrell and orchestra. His original cadenzas were tasteful and replete with references to Beethoven’s themes and motifs..”
