Bach’s Birthday Party – Part II: Family Frolic

"As performed with spontaneous sonic combustion, the program
proved that scholarship and fun aren’t mutually exclusive."

A house overflowing with kids. A rebellious teenage daughter.
Down the street, the perilous attraction of Coffee.
Papa Bach had his hands full.

AF’s principal players team up with the Young Artist Apprentices to tell the musical story of a day at the Bach family home. Soprano Madeline Healey, praised for her “gorgeous singing” (WASHINGTON POST) at her recent Kennedy Center debut, takes on the role of Bach’s favorite daughter Lieschen – determined to get Papa to find her a husband. Program includes the Flute Quartet in C Major by Bach’s Mozart-like son, Johann Christian; a trio sonata by the misfit W.F. Bach; and Papa Bach’s Harpsichord Sonata in D minor, played by Jeannette Sorrell. After intermission, the zany Coffee Cantata transforms the concert hall into a Leipzig coffeehouse.
